Elizabeth Bennett
Services were conducted for Elizabeth "Bette" Mary Bennett, age 84, April 25, 2007 at the Intermountain Baptist Church in Burney. Reverend Bud Hennessey officiated.
Mrs. Bennett died April 22, 2007 at Mayers Memorial Hospital Burney Annex of natural causes.
She was born September 30, 1922 in Bath, New York. She moved to Shasta County in 1986 from Santa Clara, CA.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her sons, Bruce and Michael of Burney, Greg of Carson City, NV; daughter Brenda Negovan of Reno, NV; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Dale E. Knapp
Former Fall River resident Dale E. Knapp died Tuesday, April 10th at Mercy Medical Hospital in Redding. He was 74.
Mr. Knapp was born near Jacksonville, OR, January 28, 1933.
He worked for the Forest Service and CalTrans.
He is survived by his wife Shelley, son Charles (Chuck) of Yreka, daughter Stacey, sister Christine Fletcher of Susanville, Stepson Daniel Guinn of Redding and 3 grandchildren.
Oral A. (Sam) Gerig
Oral A. (Sam) Gerig passed away Saturday, April 7th following a prolonged illness. He was 92.
Mr. Gerig was born June 8, 1915 and was a life long resident and rancher in Bieber, CA.
He was a bank director for Shasta County Bank for 20 years, a ten year director for the Future Farmers of America and was nominated as an honorary Chapter Farmer, a 15 year fire commissioner in Bieber, a founding member of the Lookout Stock Association and a lifetime member of the Bieber Chamber of Commerce.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Gertrude Jackson Gerig; son Robert and daughter in-law Janell; daughter Vicky Gerig; five grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

Blanche Velma Frazier
Service for Blanche Velma Frazier of Burney will be conducted graveside Tuesday (today) April 24th at 1 p.m. at Mesa City Cemetery, Mesa, AZ. She was 94.
Ms. Frazier died April 16, 2007 at Mayers Memorial Hospital Burney Annex of Natural causes.
She was born October 27, 1912 in Cheney, KS and moved to Shasta County in 2000 from Mesa, AZ. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her niece Linda Isbell and other nieces and nephews.


Phillip Garbutt
Memorial services will conducted for Phillip Garbutt, 85, of Adin April 28, 2:00 p.m. at the Adin Community Bible Church. Pastor Ryan Harper will officiate.
He died April 12 at Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills.
He was born May 22, 1921 in Princeton and graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.S. in Forestry. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1944 through 1946. He was a Forester and was active in the Adin Community Bible Church.
He is survived by his wife Gerry; sons Charles Joiner of Sebastopol, Jack Joiner of Durham, brother Lloyd of Redding, Cameron of Redding; sister Jane Nagel of Redwood City, CA, Dorothy of Texas; two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Donations may be made to Adin Community Bible Church Memorial Fund.

Bessie Townsend
No services will be held for Bessie Rene Lakey  Townsend, 85, of Redding.
Mrs. Townsend died April 2, 2006 from complications of diabetes at the Northern California Rehabilitation Hospital. Internment will be at Halcomb Cemetery in Montgomery Creek.
She was born February 17, 1922 in Ingot and was a life-long resident of the county.
She was a graduate of Fall River High School, sold nutritional supplements and was a representative of the Minnesota Woolens Clothing Company.
She is survived by husband Bill of Redding, daughters Royce Brazo of Redding and Lorraine Joiner of Prescott, AZ; son Jerry Joiner of Burney; brothers Andy Lakey of Glenburn and Kenneth Lakey of Camarillo; sisters Marcellaine Thornhill of Chico, and Dorcas Atkinson of Lewiston, ID; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Pete Lakey Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 53, Fall River Mills.

Cleo Creekmore
Memorial services were conducted April 14 for Cleo Creekmore, 85, of McArthur. Burial was at Sierra Memorial Lawn, Nevada City, CA.
Mr. Creekmore died of natural causes At Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills, April 10, 2007.
He was born July 29, 1921 in Omaha, Arkansas and moved to the area in 1997 from Lassen County. He was a mechanic for UPS, a gold miner, inventor, auto mechanic and a World War II U.S. Army veteran of the Battle of the Bulge.
He is suvived by son Robert of Winsor, CA; daughters Carol Jo Shields of Winsor and Cynthia Sue Dunckel of McArthur, sister Erma Whiteside of Colfax, CA and four grandchildren.

Rick Danya
   Private family services were conducted for Rick Edward Danya, 44, of Bur-ney.
   Mr. Danya died from natural causes at Shasta Regional Medical Center in Redding, March 29, 2007.
   He was born April 26, 1962 in Patterson, New Jersey and moved to the area in 2003 from Menlo Park, California.
   He was a computer technician.
   He is survived by his brothers, Seven of Burney and Michael of Conyers, Georgia and mother Grace, of Burney.
  
  
Walter Barnikowski, Jr.
   No services are planned for Walter Barnikowski, Jr., 73, of Cassel. Burial was at the Burney District Cemetery.
   Mr. Barnikowski died of respiratory failure at Mercy Medical Center in Redding, March 6, 2007.
   He was born August 28, 1933 in Harrison Township, Pennsylvania and moved to Cassel in 1990 from Van Nuys, CA.
   He was a car painter for General Motors in Van Nuys, California.
   He is survived by son John of Anaheim; daughter Joan Robitaille of Burney; brother Raymond, Sr. of Anaheim; sister  Julia Sacco Natrona of Heights, Pennsylvania and three grandchildren.
The family requests that donations in his name be made to Mercy Hospice, Mercy Medical Center, Redding.

Richard Richards
Services for Richard Richards, 86, 0f Burney will be Friday, March 30, 2007, 11 a.m. at McDonald's Chapel in Burney. Burial will be in the Burney Cemetery.
Mr. Richards died of natural causes, March 20 at Oak River Rehabilitation Hospital in Anderson.
He was born July 25, 1920 in Cold Creek, Colorado and moved to the area in 1965 from Fullerton, California. He was a custodian at Fall River and Burney High Schools.
He is survived by son Chris of Junction City, Oregon, sister Willy Packham of Cassel, and two grandchildren.


In Memory Of
Ralph DeOng
Services were conducted for Ralph W. DeOng, 82, of Lookout, with burial following in the Lookout Cemetery March 15, 2007. Mr. DeOng died March 11 at Modoc Medical Center in Alturas.
He was born April 28, 1924 in Albany, California to Elmer and Helen "Morse" DeOng.
He was a rancher, farmer and rodeo cowboy and loved to hunt and garden.
He married his wife of 57 years, Nancy S. Vickers June 27, 1949 in Reno, Nevada.
Survivors, in addition to his wife Nancy are sons Eugene and his wife Cary and William and his wife Marie, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Jonathan Ford
  
Services for Jonathan Brian Ford were conducted March 17 at Holcumb Cemetery in Montgomery Creek.
   Mr. Ford was murdered March 12 in his home in Round Mountain.
   He was born March 14, 1959 in San Francisco and was a resident of Round Mountain since his childhood.
   He was the owner of Golden Bear Store in Round Mountain and My-T-Fine Market in Bella Vista, a life member of the Mountain Lions Club in Montgomery Creek.
   He is survived by his wife Julie Renee; sons, Hamilton Chase, Nathaniel River; daughter Delaney Faith; Parents Elwood and Anita Ford of Round Mountain; brother David of Portland, Oregon; sisters, Patricia Elridge of Rocklin and Kristin Toney of Palo Cedro.

  
Margie Wells

   Services were conducted March 14, 2007 for former Burney resident Margie Wells, 90, of Newport, Washington.
   Mrs. Wells died of natural causes March 7, at Newport Community Hospital, Newport.
   She was born December 8, 1916 in Portland, Tennessee. She moved to the Intermountain Area in 1938 from Portland, Tennessee.
   She was a cook and waitress and charter member of Grace Community Bible Church.
   She is survived by sons Gene of Spokane, Washington and Bill of Spirit Lake, Idaho; brother Raymond Groves of Portland, Tennessee; sisters, Naomia Carter of Galtalin, Tennessee and Estelle Krien of Atlanta, Georgia; seven grand children, 13 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren.

James Sullivan
   Memorial Services were conducted March 17, 2007 for James Joseph Sullivan, 65, of Pittville. Burial was at Chico Cemetery in Chico.
   Mr. Sullivan died from a brain tumor at his ranch in Pittville, March 10.
   He was born in San Francisco, March 15, 1941 and moved to the area from Corte Madera, CA in 1998.
   He was a retired employee of Chevron Shipping Corporation.
   He is survived by wife Marta; daughters Laurie Danaher and Amy Siegfried; stepsons Russell, Greg and Ken Mayer, brother Daniel and 11 grandchildren.

Randy Penland
   Memorial Services were conducted March 10, 2007 for Randy Penland, 54, of Burney. Burial was at the Burney District Cemetery.
   Mr. Penland died at his residence.
   He was born in Bryson City, North Carolina and was a youth counselor.
   He is survived by his wife Valorie Hatchett, sons Jesse Penland and Tyson Casper of Redding; daughters Talitha Penland, Heather O’Keefe, and Holly Casper of Burney; brothers Terry, Larry, Tom, Danny, Ben and Ken of Redding; and mother Opal of Redding.
  
Wilbin Barnes
   Services were conducted March 9 for Wilbin Raymond Barnes, 51, at the Pit River Health Clinic. Burial was at the Bone Family Cemetery.
   Mr. Barnes died March 6, 2007 in Redding. He was born December 22, 1955 in Shasta County. He was a self employed mechanic and member of the Full Gospel Church of Hat Creek.
He is survived by his wife Ataloa: son Solomon Barnes; daughters Lacy, Angelia, Tresa Zuno, Rebecka, Sarah, Leah, and Bethany Barnes; brothers Alvin, Ernest, and Marshal Barnes; sisters Anna, Cloria, Deliah and Ila Barnes.

Betty Waggoner
   Private family services are planned for Betty Sue Waggoner, 65, of Fall River Mills. Mrs. Waggoner died February 18, 2007 at Shasta Regional Medical Center in Redding.
   She moved to Fall river Mills in 2000 from Marin County, CA. She had worked as  an administrative secretary in the Bay Area.
   She is survived by husband, Landon; son, Jon, of El Salvador; daughter Lisa Ann of Redding; and sister Marsha Lee MacLeod of Ventura, CA.
  

Randy Foster

   A Celebration of Life was conducted for Randy Duane Foster, 44, of Pittville, February 26, 2007. He died February 17, at his parents home in McArthur after a lengthy illness.
   He was born December 9, 1962 in Redding. He was a communications specialist.
Mr. Foster is survived by wife Ronda; son Adam of Redding; his mother Toni Davis and step-father Jack Davis of McArthur; brother Gary D. Foster; sister Terry Bobo; and grandparents Fred and Nettie Wagner of Redding.

Robert Scalf
Services were held February 10, 2007 for Robert Edward Scalf, 59, of Burney.
Mr. Scalf died February 3 as  the result of a vehicle accident.
He was born in Weed, July 6, 1947 and moved to the Burney area in 2002 from Oregon.
He is survived by his wife Lea; sons Steve and Mike; daughters Shelly Scalf and Gina Dankenbbring; mother Leora Howell; brother Vern; sister Roberta Evans and 16 grandchildren.

Eugene Lagomarsino II

No services will be held for Eugene “Geno” Joseph Lagomarsino II, 83, of Fall River Mills.
Mr. Lagomarsino died January 27, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center in Redding.
He was born July 15, 11923 in New Jersey and moved to the Fall River Mills area in 1968.

Howard Harris
Family graveside services will be conducted at a later date for Howard L. Harris, 67, of Bieber.
Mr. Harris died February 1, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center in Redding.
He was born August 4, 1939 in Alameda, CA and moved to Lassen County from Lodi in 2003.
He was a crane operator in heavy construction, a member of the U.S. Coast Guard, NRA, Lodi Elks Lodge, member of St. Stephens Catholic Church. and the Operating Engineers, Local #3.
He is survived by his wife Kathy; stepson Dave Hume of Hemet, CA; daughter Kimberly Cook of Kilgore, TX and two grandchildren.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made in his name to the Mercy Hospitality House, 2175 Rosaline Avenue, Redding, CA 96001.

John Pringer
Private services are planned for John Lorne Prin-ger, 49, of Hat Creek.
Mr. Pringer died January 30, 2007 near Susanville.
He was born December 31, 1957 in Burbank, California.
He was employed by Franklin Logging.
Mr. Pringer is survived by his son, Joey, and his longtime companion Judy Beeson.

Martha Harvey
Services for Martha Maye Harvey, 90, of Redding will be 2 p.m., February 12, 2007, at the United Methodist Church in Fall River Mills. Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in McArthur.
Mrs. Harvey died January 29 at Beverly Healthcare in Redding.
She is survived by daughters Virginia Dye of McArthur, Martha Bell of Weaverville: son, Robert of Red Bluff, 11 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Geraldine Churney
Geraldine "Jerry" Burke Churney, 84, of Burney, died Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills. Family services will be held at a later date.
"Jerry" was born May 10, 1922 in Athens, California and moved with her husband Dr. Joseph Churney and three children to Burney in 1948.
She was a homemaker and office manager for her husband's chiropractic practice. She was a former president of American Legion Post 441 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 5689, chirwoman of the American Legion's Girls' State program, and den mother of Pack 38, Den 3 of the Boy Scouts of America.
Survivors include daughter Jennie Cain of Pendleton, Oregon; sons LeRoy and Dan Nelson, both of Milton-Freewater, Oregon, and Michael and Joseph Churney III, both of Burney. She also had 16 grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.
Her family fondly remembers her as "quite a lady" and will always treasure her commitment to family, her ability to listen to others, her mile high lemon meringue pie, and her open door policy regarding hospitality.

Frank Avalos, Jr.
Private services will be conducted for Frank Joseph Avalos, Jr., 62, of Burney. Burial will be in the Burney  District Cemetery.  Mr. Avalos died January 13, 2007 at his residence.
He was born May 17, 1944 in San Francisco and moved to Shasta County in January 2006.
He was a bartender in the Bay Area for 30 years and a teamster for the San Francisco Chronicle.
He is survived by sisters  Marion Ward of Burney, Carmen Avalos and Linda Denton of the Bay Area; daughters Lisa, Duby, General; and son Joseph Avalos, all of the Bay are; and four grandchildren.

Edward Coleman, Sr.
Memorial Services were held January 20, 2007 for Edward D. Coleman, Sr., 77, of Burney.
Mr. Coleman died January 12 in Burney. He was born November 24, 1929 in Walnut Creek and moved to the area from there is 1982.
He was the owner/operator of Coleman & Cox Diatomaceous Earth Mining of Burney, a Korean Conflict veteran of the U.S. Air Force and the Burney Lions Club.
He is survived by wife Diana of Burney; daughters Cynthia Constancino of Oak Run, Sally Shapiro of Burney, Jennifer Mack of Redding, Elizabeth Sawyer of Lawton, Oklahoma and Terri Coleman of Loomis, California; brother Leo Jr. of Kona, Hawaii; stepbrother Harry Vernon of Arizona, sisters Lucille Jones of Lafayette and Daphine Altman of Chico, 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Gerald Powers
Funeral services will he held at 11 a.m. January 17, 2007 at the Holly Cross Cemetery Chapel in Colma, California for Gerald "Jerry" V Powers, 78, of Burney.
Mr. Powers died January 8 at Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills.
He was born December 4, 1928 in San Francisco and moved to the Burney area in 1979 from the Bay Area. He was a bartender for the Rex Club, a Merchant Marine Veteran of World War II, and  a member of the American Legion Post 441 of Burney.
He is survived by son Dan of Sacramento; brother Joseph of Petaluma: sisters Rosemary Fiddler of Murphys, California and Maureen Mainburg of San Jose.

Fran Grace
Fran Grace, the former owners of the Lassen Bench Resort, RV park and Mexican Restaurant with her husband Buck died earlier this month in Lone Pine, California.

Charles Hicks Jr.
A memorial service for Charles Hicks Jr., 66, of Burney will be held at 2 p.m. January 10, 2007 at the Word of Life Assembly of God Church in Burney. Mr. William Cummings will officiate.
Mr. Hicks died at Mercy Medical Center in Redding, January 5.
He was born April 8, 1940 in Lake Village, Arkansas. He moved to the area from Lake Village in 1962.
He was the owner of C&B Butchers in Burney.
He is survived by wife Barbara; son's Dewey of Oklahoma and Charles of Washington, daughter, Melina Fletcher of Kansas, two brothers, three sisters and five grandchildren.

In Memory of
Merldean (Durkee) Bidwell
Merldean Bidwell passed away Saturday, December 15, following a prolonged illness. She was 75.
Merldean was born on September 20, 1932 in Westwood, CA. At the age of 5, she and her family moved to Bieber where her father purchased a lumber mill.
She was a life long resident of the Big Valley community.
Merldean was a school bus driver for the Big Valley Joint Unified School district for 36 years. She served as past president for the PTA and Big Valley Booster's Club. She volunteered as a committee member for the Big Valley Recreation District and Big Valley Alumni Association. Merldean was involved in, organized, and helped with numerous school and community activities, fundraisers and events. She was a lifetime member of he Grace Bible Church.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Gene Bidwell; sons Gregory, Jeffery and David; daughters Jennifer and Sarah; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held on Friday December 21 at 2 p.m. at the Big Valley High School gymnasium in Bieber.
The family asks that all memorial contributions be made to the Big Valley Booster's Club Scholarship fund, P.O. Box 9, Bieber, CA 96009.

Jack Killin
Family services will be scheduled at a later date for Jack Rankin Killin, 83, of Burney. Burial will be at the Burney Cemetery.
Mr. Killin died November 30, 2007 at Mayers Memorial Hospital of natural causes.
He was born January 10, 1924 in Los Angeles, CA and moved to the area in 1999 from Pacifica. He was a self employed laborer.
He is survived by his sister, Barbara Gilchrist of Burney.

Clifford Carter
Services will be scheduled at a later date for former McArthur resident Clifford Wright Carter, 53. Burial will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in McArthur.
Mr. Carter died of natural causes at his home in Redding, November 29, 2007.
He was born December 23, 1953 in California, a graduate of Big Valley High School and a 50 year resident of the area.
Mr. Carter was a custom farmer for 15 years.

Charles Lawson
Services for Charles Edward Lawson, 79, of Burney will be at 11 a.m., December 15, 2007 at McDonald's Chapel in Burney. The Reverend George Wright of the First Baptist Church will officiate. Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. at the Burney Chapel. Burial will follow the services at the Burney District Cemetery on Bailey Street.
Mr. Lawson died of natural causes December 6, at his home.
He was born July 17, 1928 in Batesville, Arkansas and moved to the area in 1974 from Tracy, CA. He was a former Waste Water Treatment Plant operator and past District Manager of the Burney Water District. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, member of the Burney VFW Post 5689 and founding member of the First Baptist Church of Burney.
He is survived by sons David Earl of Manhattan Beach, CA and James Edward of Burney; daughters Doris Fannin of Redding and Michelle Lawson of Covington, LA; sisters Irene Underwood of Stockton and Mary Bivens of Burns, OR; 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made in his name to Intermountain Hospice, P.O. Box 459, Fall River Mills, CA.

John  Finnell
Services will be scheduled at a later date for John Mack Finnell, 76, of Bieber. Burial is at the Pine Grove Cemetery in McArthur.
Mr. Finnell died at Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills of natural causes December 1, 2007.
He moved to the Lassen County area from Redding in 1965.
He was an equipment operator for Lassen County Public Works, a U.S. Navy Veteran and member of Squadron 52, during the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by wife Beatrice of Bieber; son Doug Hawkin of Hesperia, CA; daughters Barbara Jagerson of Santa Barbara, Kathy Cagle of Highland, Janitta Taylor of Lookout and Valinda Stell of Vacaville; 10 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Frank Ramos
Services were conducted in St. Helena, California for Frank D. Ramos, 77, former resident and pharmacist in the Fall River Mills and Burney areas November 27, 2007 at the St. Helena Cemetery.
Mr. Ramos died at his home in the St. Helena area November 20.
He was a businessman and heavily involved in the communities while a resident of the area.
He is survived by his wife Ethel; sons David, Stephen and Jeffrey and two granddaughters.

Lee Shaffer
Services for Lee Earl Shaffer, 19, of Burney will be at 1 p.m., Thursday at the Intermountain Baptist Church. The Reverend Bud Hennessey will officiate. Burial will be at the Burney District Cemetery.
Mr. Shaffer died in an auto accident, November 20, 2007 in Burney.
He was born October 17, 1988 in Fall River Mills and was a lifetime resident of the area.
He was a PFC in Charlie Co 1/168 Charlie Company as a Mechanic Crew Chief for a Medevac Black Hawk at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
He is survived by his parents, Johnathan and Elizabeth; brother Timothy, all of Burney and grandparents Judy and Earl Varney of South Carolina and Charlene and Benny Brown of Indiana.

Paul Bauer
Private family services were held for Paul Johan Bauer, 84, of McArthur. Burial was at the Pine Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Bauer died of natural causes November 16, 2007 at Mayers Memorial Hospital.
He was born April 22, 1923 in Norway and moved to the area from Gridley, California in 2003.
He was a warehouseman.
He is survived by daughter Linnea Hinshaw of McArthur, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made in his name to a charity of choice.

Lester Ford
Graveside services for Lester A. Ford, 88, of McArthur were at the Pine Grove Cemetery in McArthur November 19, 2007.
Mr. Ford died from natural causes at Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills, November 15.
He was born March 24, 1919 in Willits, Ca and moved to the county in 1981 from Orange Vale, CA.
He was a rocket preparation specialist in the Aerospace industry and a WWII U.S. Army veteran of the 4th Infantry Regiment in the Aleutian Islands.

He is survived by significant other, Nelda Edwards, of McArthur; sons Todd of Reno, Nevada and James II of Loyalton, CA; daughter Lynette Rojas of Tuskahoma, Oklahoma, four sisters, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

She was born November 26, 1956 in Michacan, Mexico.
She moved to Shasta County from Westminister, CA in 1997.
She was an aircraft manufacturing machinist, and a member of the Mountain Quilters.
She is survived by her husband Patrick; sons Greg of Cassel, Josh of Lakewood, CA; daughters Bernice Caras of Redding, Amelia Ahumada of Cassel, mother & stepfather Amelia and Wesley of Los Angeles, CA; two grandchildren.

Thomas Banyard
Graveside Services for Thomas Lou Banyard, 66, of Burney will be at the Burney Cemetery on Bailey Street at 11 a.m., Saturday, followed by a memorial service at noon at the Burney Lions Hall.
Mr. Banyard died of natural causes November 3, 2007 at Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills.
He was born April 22, 1941 in Newburg, Oregon and moved to the area in 2000 from Fort Bragg, CA.
He was a water treatment operator at Fort Bragg for 20 years and a member of the Fort Bragg Lions Club.

Mrs. White died in an auto accident in Johnson Park October 14.
She was born May 30, 1963 in Redding and was a lifelong resident of the area.
She was a waitress at Angelina's at the Rex Club.

Della Baker
Graveside services were conducted October 17, 2007 at the Burney Cemetery for Della Rosemary Baker, 66, of Burney.
Mrs. Baker died of natural causes at her residence October 13.
She was born July 2, 1941 at Canby, CA and moved to the area in 1982 from Alturas. She was a teacher's aide with the Fall River Joint Unified School District and member of the Pit River Tribe Astariwi Band.
Mrs. Baker is survived by sons Alex Smith of San Clemente, CA and Zalynn Baker of Burney; brothers James Homer Wright of Burney and Phillip Wright of Warmsprings, OR; sister Bernice Shockley of Redding and one grandson.

Larmar McGram
Graveside services were conducted October 18, 2007 for Lamar "Moe" J. McGram, 76, of Burney.
Mr. McGram died of natural causes at his home October 11.
He was born December 4, 1930 in Magna, Utah and moved to the area in 1956 from Willits, CA.
He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII, businessman and former owner of Burney Disposal, BJ's Coffee Hut and Art's Outpost.
Mr. McGram is survived by sons: Jeffery of Burney, Paul and Arts of Shasta Lake; brothers Daniel Wayne Nelson and Earl I. Nelson, both of Idaho, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Marjorie Brunson, 83, of Glenburn and Fall River Mills passed away on October 10, 2007 in Sacramento.
She is survived by her sister, Bessie Santos, Seven Children: Jerry Bradley, Karly Bartholomew, Beverly Brunson, Barbara Broughton, Richard Brunson, Dan Brunson, Bill Brunson, eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild and five nieces.
She will always be remembered for her love, kindness, and her great pride in her children.

Mrs. Thompson died of natural causes at her residence October 9, 2007.
She was born September 26, 1914 in Calabria, Italy.
She is She was a career nurse and a U.S. Army Nurse serving as a First Lieutenant in England, France and Belgium during WW II.
She is survived by daughters Susan Lee Clements of Bokelia, Florida, Lynne Michele Sluughnessy of New River, Arizona, Andrea Rae Quick of Chico; son Michael Alan Thompson of Stanton, CA, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sisters Frances Conte, Carmea Barzia and Theresa Sgavicchio.

Burney businessman Lamar J. "Moe" McGram, 76, died of natural causes October 11, at home.
McGram, was once the owner-operator of Burney Disposal, a partner in B.J.'s Coffee Hut and owner of Art's Outpost.

Steve Henry Luck
Services for Steve Henry Luck, 79 of Burney will be Friday, October 12, 2007, 11 a.m. at the Grace Community Bible Church in Burney. The Reverend Henry Winkleman will officiate. Inurement will be at the Burney District Cemetery.
Mr. Luck died October 4, 2007 at Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills of natural causes.
Steve Henry Luck was born on December 28, 1927 in Colusa, California to Irene and Steve George Luck. He was one of six children.
His father followed construction work, so after Steve graduated from grade school at Clear Creek School near  Redding, he went to work at the Keswick Dam.
His father and brother Toney worked at Shasta Dam. Then in 1943, after the death of his mother, Steve went to work in Little Valley for Indian Head Lumber Co. He worked there until 1945 when he enlisted in the United states Army. After basic Training at Fort Bliss, Texas, he was sent to Germany.
He met Elizabeth Etzemberger and on January 3, 1948 they were married in an Army Chapel at Weiden, Germany.
In November of 1948 he and his bride returned to the United States. In 1949 he went to work in Little Valley.
In 1950 he was called back in the service during the Korean War.
Returning to Little Valley in 1952, he went back to work at the lumber mill.
In 1954 the Indian Head Lumber  Mill burned to the ground, so he and Betty moved to Burney.
Steve worked at Pondosa for awhile before going to work for Scott's Lumber Co.
While in Burney he joined the volunteer fire department and in 1968 he became the first paid fireman. It was a job he held until 1979 when he retired because of a neck injury.
He was a member of the Grace Community Bible Church, VFW, and was instrumental in getting the Big Flag on Christmas Tree Lane.
He is survived by his wife Betty; two children, Steve of Burney and Gretchen of Klamath Falls, Oregon; brother Leon of Francis, Oklahoma; sisters Elizabeth Miller and Lu Alta Phyl, both of Willows, three grand daughters and four great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Burney Flag Fund, c/o the Burney Lions Club, P.O. Box 217, Burney.


Steven Schottel
Services will be held today, October 9, 2007, 2 p.m., at McDonald's Chapel in Burney for Steven Philip Schottel, 49, of Burney. The Reverend Lee Shepherd will officiate. Burial will follow at the Burney District Cemetery on Mountain View.
Mr. Schottel died October 1, at his residence from natural causes.
He was born January 24, 1958 in Redding and was a lifetime resident of the area.
He was a mill worker for Sierra Pacific Mills.

James Lahey
Services for James Patrick Lahey, 69, of Burney were conducted September 28, 2007 at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Burney. Burial followed at the Burney District Cemetery.
Mr. Lahey died of natural causes at Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills, September 23.
He was born September 7, 1938 in Oakland, CA and moved to the area from Pittsburgh, CA in 2003.
He was a dispatcher ordinance controller for the federal government for 16 years.
He was a USMC Veteran of the Vietnam Conflict; a member of American Legion Post 441, Burney and the Burney Lions Club.
He is survived by wife Diane, of Burney.

Agnes Bartlett
Services were held at Mortuary Chapel March 30, 2007 for Agnes Dorothy Bartlett, 80, formerly of Bieber. Internment followed at Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, CA. She was a resident of San Gabriel.
Mrs. Bartlett died March 26, 2007 at the Presbyterian Hospice Home in Whittier.
She was a housewife and long-time correspondent for Mountain Echo.

Dorotha Kramer
Services will be held at 11 a.m., October 6 at the Grace Bible Church in Nubieber for Dorotha Kramer, 97, of Bieber, died September 28, 2007 at Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills.
Mrs. Kramer was born at the Gerig ranch in Bieber, October 23, 1910.
She was a founding member of the Grace Bible Church in Bieber, helped start the Big Valley Senior Center, fought hard for the Senior Bus Service, was a member of the board of directors of the Big Valley Historical Society, a member of the Intermountain Cattlewomen and a 50-year member of the Lookout Grange.
She is survived by her son, Charles; daughter, Mardell Tucker, three grandsons and six great-grandchildren.

He was a farmer and foreman of the Modoc County Road Department, An Army veteran of WWII, and a member of the Lookout Fire Department.

She was a Fall River High School graduate and a Certifi ed Nurses Assistant at Mayers Memorial Hospital for 21 years.
She is survived by her daughters Naomie Murray of Everett, WA, Elaine Stansberry of Lookout, Elizabeth Royal (Brock) of Fall River Mills and Vickie Jimenez of Glenburn; son Oscar Smith of Shingletown; brothers Adrian, Robert and Eric McCulley; sisters, Helen Pomerleau and Martha Collins and mother Marion Mc- Culley.

Rinda Reavis
Graveside services were held for Rinda Reavis, 88, of Fall River Mills. Burial was at the Indian Reservation Cemetery in Alturas.
Mrs. Reavis died of natural causes at mayers memorial Hospital, August 23, 2007.

Graveside services were held August 18, 2007 for Nancy Suesanne deOng, 76, of Lookout., in the Lookout Cemetery.
Mrs. deOng died August 12, 2007 in Lookout.
She was born July 18, 1931 in San Francisco and lived in Modoc County for the past 40 years.
She was the librarian at the Lookout Library, a long-time correspondent for Mountain Echo, a member of the Lookout Fire Department Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary.

Loren Widberg

Services for Cecil Ray Fitzwater, 96, of Fall River Mills will be 11 a.m., August 20, 2007 at the Odd Fellows Hall in Millville, CA. Burial will follow at the Millville Cemetery.
He died July 21, from natural causes at Mayers Memorial Hospital. He was born April 30, 1911 in California.
Mr. Fitzwater was retired from both the U.S. Forest Service and PG&E. He also owned the Barrel Inn for years in Fall River Mills. He was a member of the Odd Fellows.
He is survived by son Curtis of San Diego and sister Argent Hale of Fall River Mills.

Robert Medhurst
Services were conducted at McDonald's Chapel in Burney August 3, 2007 for Robert James Medhurst, 72, of Fall River Mills.
Mr. Medhurst died of natural causes, July 30, at Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills.
He was  born October 18, 1934 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada and moved to the area in 1997 from Pittsburgh, CA.
He was a retired police officer.

Vera Joleen Cooper
born May 1st, 1981 at Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills. Vera was injured during birth, which caused her to have cerebral palsy. She went through numerous years of physical therapy, speech therapy and surgeries throughout her life beating all the odds of everyone who said she would never be able to walk, talk or come home from a hospital.
Vera attended Big Valley Primary until the 3rd grade at which time she transferred to Grace Bible Christian Academy. Vera graduated high school with a 4.0 GPA in 1999 when she really stepped out on a limb and paid for her own senior trip to Hawaii and despite her fear of water and heights went parasailing.
Vera had many loves in her life the most important being her nieces and nephews, which she devoted her life to. Vera also had a love for animals, cooking, sewing, gardening, children and basket weaving. Vera taught school at Hope Christian Academy and at the same time started attending Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA where she was one class away from having her AA degree. Vera’s dream was to become a wildlife biologist and start her own sanctuary for injured animals.
Vera devoted her life to the Lord at an early age and lived her life entirely for God. Vera was an active member of the Adin Community Bible Church and had also attended Grace Bible Church and Lookout Church. Vera loved helping in Sunday school and Awana.
Vera went to be home with her Savior on July 13th, 2007 at the young age of 26 after a vehicle accident, which occurred on June 30th, 2007. Vera passed away at Mercy Medical Center in Redding, CA.
Vera is survived by her parents Joe and Mary Cooper of Lookout. Her sister and family Joann, James, Jake and Whitney Moore of Lookout, CA. Her sister and family Meredith, Tony, Edward and Amanda Richno of Adin, CA.
In lieu of flowers please make memorial contributions to the Vera Cooper Memorial Fund PO Box 8 Adin, CA 96006. Funds to be used to offset medical and funeral expenses. The family will make a donation to the emergency medical services in Big Valley with any remaining monies.

Ida Sharp
Graveside services were held for Ida Emillie "Millie" Sharp, 95, June 20,  at Lawncrest Chapel and Memorial Park in Redding, CA.
Mrs. Sharp died June 13, 2007 at Copper Ridge Care Center in Redding.
She was born Jan. 12, 1912 near Blevins, Hempstead County, AR.
 She is survived by four children; A.B. Chambless of Mapleton, OR; Clyda Goodfellow of Burney, CA; Annette Beyschau of Redding, CA; and Fred Sharp of Seattle, WA. Also 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

Orma Albaugh
Private family services will be held at a later date for Orma Kramer Albaugh, 98, of Adin. Burial will be at the Adin Cemetery.
Mrs. Albaugh died of natural causes July 10, 2007 at Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills.
She was born September 3, 1908 in Bieber and was a lifelong resident of the area.
Mrs. Albaugh was a homemaker, member of the Intermountain Cow Belles and Lookout Grange.
She is survived by her son Dale of Adin and Ronald of Fallon, NV; daughter Jean Walker of Rough & Ready, CA; nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
The family requests that donations be made in her name to a charity of choice.

Penelope Lemke
Services were held July 5, 2007 for Penelope "Penny" Lou Lemke, 57, of Adin. Burial was at the Adin Cemetery.
Mrs. Lemke died July 1, at Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills following a long illness.
She was born February 21, 1950 in Long Beach and moved to Lassen County from Southern California in 1976.
She is survived by sons Michael of 29 Palms, CA and Ryan of Adin and three grand children.

Mitchell Kantz
Private services were held June 23, 2007 in Fall River Mills for Mitchell Claude Kantz, 59, of Fall River Mills. He died June 19, at home from natural causes.
He was born November 25, 1947 in Alhambra, CA. Mr. Kantz was a resperatory Therapist.
He is survived by his wife YeVonne; step sons Everett, Jeffrey Easley, Rebecca Drewry and Jeremiah Seawell. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Intermountain Hospice in lieu of flowers.

Joseph Atencio
Private family services will be held at a later date for Joseph C. Atencio, 80, of Burney. Burial will be at the Burney District Cemetery. Mr. Atencio died of natural causes at his home in Burney June 17, 2007.
He was born March 26, 1927 at Fort Garland, Colorado and moved to the area in 1972 from Riverside, CA. He was a retired custodian for the Fall River Joint Unified School District.
He is survived by his wife Delores; son, Leroy Atencio of Pueblo, CO; stepson Jesse Colin of Hesperia, CA; daughter Gloria of Pueblo; stepdaughter Olivia Stevenson of Burney; brother and sister Louie and May of Pueblo; 11 grandchildren and 13 grandchildren.

Federico Torres
Graveside services were held June 15, 2007 at the Lookout Cemetery for Federico H. Torres, 74, of Lookout. He died June 13 at Mayers Memorial Hospital.
He was born October 7, 1932 in Ualde, Texas and moved to McCloud in 1953. He was a section foreman for the McCloud River Railroad.  He is survived by wife Josefa of Lookout; son, Abraham of Lookout; daughters Yolanda Torres and Romelia Gonzalez of Burney, Maria Mix of Redding, Rosa Linda Green of Navato, CA, and Estela Lumbereas of Westport, WA; 24 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
The family request that donations be make in his name to the Lookout Volunteer Fire Department in lieu of flowers.

Theresa Harris
Services for Theresa Anne Hampton Harris, 55, of Burney were held June 25, 2007. Burial was at the Burney Cemetery. She died at home June 21 following a 5-year battle with complications after heart surgery.
She was born July 18, 1952 in Visalia, CA and moved to Burney in 1985.
She is survived by her husband Steve; daughters Addie Owens of Burney and Anna Garner of McArhur; sisters Dianna Simms of Reno, Jo Ann Gorton of Burney and Barbara Sharp
of Grants Pass, Oregon and six grandchildren.
Mrs. Harris was a housewife, Volunteer EMT and toy drive volunteer for the Burney Fire District, Girl Scout for over 40 years and a service unit leader, a amateur radio operator and member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Linda Wortman
No services are planned for Linda Fay Wortman, 56, of Klamath Falls, Oregon. She died after a short battle with cancer, June 14, 2007.
She was born August 1, 1950 in Lakeport, CA.
She is survived by her caregiver and companion Jeff Bromley of Klamath Falls; sons, Michael Bromley David and Brian Wortman, all of Fall River Mills, Brian Wortman of Chico; sisters Mary Wortman of Fall River Mills, Edith Sanders of McKinleyville, brothers, James and Dale Towe of Kelseyville and Bill Towe of Chico.

Suzette Holly
Family services will be held at a later date for Suzette L. Holly, 43, of Fall River Mills. Burial will be at Sacramento Memorial Lawn, Sacramento.
Mrs. Holly died June 10, 2007 at her residence from an unknown cause.
She was born August 21, 1963 in Sacramento and moved to the area in 1997 from there. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by daughters Rebekah and Janessa Kirk of Fall River Mills and Jessika Kirk of Sacramento; sisters Georgette, Lizette, Nicholette, Brigette, and Yavatte.
Memorial contributions for her burial may be made to any US or Wells Fargo Bank .

Raymond Arden Green
Graveside services were conducted for Raymond Arden Green, age 55, of Nubieber  May 4, 2007 in the McArthur Pine Grove Cemetery. Pastor Henry Winkleman officiated.
Mr. Green died in his home April 29, 2007 of natural causes.
He was born June 5, 1955 in Nubieber, CA
He was a lifelong resident of Lassen County and worked in the logging industry.
He is survived by his mother Erma J. Green of Watson, OK; bothers Roman of Phoenix, AZ, Rodrick  and Roban of  Watson, OK; sisters Raynova Broom and Rachel Stephens of Sayre, OK and many other relatives.

Charles O'Connor
Services were held May 28, 2007 for Charles Francis O'Connor, 91, of Burney. Burial will be at the Redding Cemetery at a later date.
Mr. O'Connor died May 22 at Mayers Memorial Hospital of natural causes.
He was born January 29, 1916 in Buffalo, New York and moved to the area in 1979 from Rosarita, Mexico.
He was a Supervisor of Finance for the U.S. Postal Service, A WW II veteran who participated in the Iwo Jima campaign and a long-time member of the Burney Lions Club.
He is survived by son Charles of Spokane, daughter Anne of Burney, five grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Laura Caplener
Private family services were held for Laura Bell Caplener, 93, of Burney. Burial was at the Pine Grove Cemetery. Mrs. Caplener died of natural causes, May 13, 2007 at Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills.
She was born April 6, 1914 in Pyron, Texas and moved to the area in 1988 from Scottsdale, Arizona. She was an LVN for 40 years.
She is survived by daughters Kathy McDonald of Burney and Dorris Ann Grutzmacher of Scottsdale, five grandchildren, two  great-grandchildren and three great-great- grandchildren.

Coral Van Benten
Private services were held in Santa Rosa, CA for Coral Van Benten, 85, of McArthur. Mrs. Van Benten died at home March 22, 2007 of Cancer.
She was born April 1, 1921 in Iowa. She moved to the Intermountain Area from Healdsburg, CA in 1981.
She was a member of Eastern Star and Past Worthy Matron of the Healdsburg Chapter, a member of a bowling league and a volunteer at Mayers Memorial Hospital.
She is survived by her husband, Larry; daughters Carolyn  and Marolyn; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren .

Tusons Cub Rhoades
Services were conducted May 10, 2007 for Tusons Cub Rhoades, 75-days old, of Burney. Burial was at the Goose Valley Cemetery.
He died of SIDS, May 5, 2007.
He was born February 20, 2007 in Redding and was a lifelong resident of the area.
He is survived by his parents, Juana Galvan and Victorio Rhoades of Burney; brothers Martin Little Bear Galvan of Burney, Michael Rhoades of Chico and Victorio Rhoades Jr. of Oregon; Grandfather Eladio Flores, of Burney and Elsie Rhoades of Burney and Great grandmother Claudina Shockley of Alturas.

Matthew Heiland
Matthew Thomas Heiland, 20, died April 29, 2007 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Oklahoma City.
He was born December 20, 1986 in Hamilton, MT. and moved to Burney in 2000. He attended school at Fall River. He was in the U.S. Air Force.
Surviving Mr. Heiland are his mother Teresa Heiland and grandparents Tom and Janice Heiland all of Darby. Matt is also survived by his father, Tom Catalano of Gillette, WY and grandparents Josephine Grubb and Philip and JoAnn Catalano of Stevensville; brother Kameran.
A Formal Military Service was held in Gillette WY.

Dennis St. John
Graveside services were conducted yesterday, May 7, at the Fall River Mills Cemetery for Dennis Roy St John, 55, of Fall River Mills.
Mr. St John died May 3, 2007 at Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills of natural causes.
He was born January 29, 1952 in Redding and was a lifetime resident of the area.
He was a Fall River High School graduate, a member of the Community United Methodist Church and a tank truck operator for the U.S. Forest Service for 6 years.
He is survived by his daughter Crista Dale St. John of Orlando, FL; sisters Lisa Dale St. John of Lakeland, FL and Lynn Almont St. John of Burney; mother Barbara Drew St. John of Fall River Mills; father, Dale Roy St. John of Orlando.
