AG Won’t Prosecute County

ALTURAS – The Modoc County Grand Jury announced last week that the State Attorney General has declined to seek prosecution of the County’s officials.
Over the past several years, the Modoc County Grand Jury looked into the use of restricted funds. The 2010-11 County Grand Jury sent a written request to the Attorney General’s Office for an investigation into possible violations of the law.
Their request was required by law when a grand jury becomes aware of possible malfeasance. Deputy Attorney General Cliff Zail reported to this year’s grand jury an August 9 that here would be on criminal prosecution as a result of the county’s financial problems.
“The State Attorney General stated that a great number of people were interviewed and, although poor judgment was displayed, the general effort to divert monies to the Modoc County Hospital to keep it open was deemed to be with good intentions. No one person benefited financially from these monies.” Spokesperson for the Modoc County Grand Jury Pat Wood said.
