All north and southbound lanes of I-5 were closed by mid-afternoon last Wednesday, August 1 because of a fire that started in the median and spread across the roadway to the east.
That closure caused traffic to be re-routed along Highway 299, through Burney to Highway 89 and back to I-5 at Mount Shasta City.
The detour over steep two lane roads which include a number tight curves, created major traffic and problems, especially for the loaded 18-wheelers.
The southbound lanes were opened before 11 p.m. but the northbound closure remained in effect until 3 a.m. Thursday.
The fire was officially declared contained at approximately 6:30 p.m. Saturday, August 4
