Deputies rescued a mentally disturbed 51-year-old nude Redding man from the Pit River Canyon at the bottom of the Pit River Canyon, near the River Thursday afternoon.
According to Deputy Quentin Johnston, the man had been committed to Mayers Memorial Hospital Wednesday for a mental health evaluation. He walked away and made it into the Canyon approximately 4 – 5 miles southwest of the hospital. Deputies, with the aid of the California Highway Patrol helicopter and other search and rescue personnel located him near the river at the bottom of the canyon. He showed signs of dehydration when found. He was flown to Mayers for treatment and the medical evaluation late Thursday afternoon. His identity nor medical condition was released.
