OLD STATION – Deputies from the Burney substation received a report of a missing hiker at 9:30 p.m. June 26.
Seventeen Year-old Michael Babcock of San Jose was last seen walking upstream alongside of Hat Creek near Highway 44 away from the Hat Creek Resort.
He was wearing shorts and a T-shirt.
The temperature in that area were expected to drop below 32 degrees during the night.
A search was launched around 10:30 p.m. in the area south of the resort. Additional responding deputies along with search and rescue volunteers responded to the area. Shortly after 1:30 a.m, early Wednesday morning deputies located shoe prints of the subject leading them to the south. A search team followed the track for over 4 miles before locating Babcock uninjured.
Except for small scratches on his legs, he was cold, tired and very grateful to see the rescue team. Babcock was reunited with his family shortly after 3 a.m.
